History
For thousands of years, Puerto Rico was habited by
indigenous groups. When Columbus arrived in 1493, he found
the island populated by Taíno Indians.
The island became a Spanish colony, and in 1809
Puerto Rico was given the status of a province with the
right to have representatives in the Spanish government.
During the 19 th century, Puerto Rico was granted its
first constitution. In 1898 in
a result of the
Spanish -American War, Puerto Rico became a territory of the
United States. In 1917, Puerto Ricans
were granted U. S. citizen status, and by 1951 the island had its own government
with its own constitution.
Puerto Rico was declared a
commonwealth territory of the United States.

languages are Spanish and English.
While the Spanish
is the island’s primary language.

Size
One hundreds ten miles long and
35 miles wide, Puerto Rico rises 4,390 feet at the highest
point (Cerro de Punta) along its Central Mountain Range.

population is 3.9 million, approximately half of whom live
in the San Juan metropolitan area.
Climate
Puerto Rico enjoy s
a tropical climate. Temperatures average 82 degrees F. (28
degrees C.) throughout the year, and the trade winds provide
constant breezes.

no immigration problems for visiting U. S. citizen, although
